INNER MONGOLIA-MAUSOLEUM OF GENGHIS KHAN
This morning, isit the Mausoleum of Genghis (Chinggis) Khaan in Dongsheng (~185km south of Baotao). It was built by the Mongols as a shrine for the ashes of their revered leader. The Mausoleum was destroyed during the cultural revolution but the Mongolian people rebuild it at great cost, complete with a replica of the Ger used by Genghis. The walls paintings show the life of Genghis, and the direct descendants of his famous white horses wander about in the garden area. If we are lucky we may see a wedding and/or local people burning incense for Genghis. It is a unique experience. Holy pilgrimages to the Mausoleum are now common for Inner Mongolians, who have elevated Genghis Khan to a Divine position. The Genghis Khan's Mausoleum, rebuilt in 1954 , 185 kilometers south of Baotou, is a mausoleum, in which only his clothing is buried in memory of the great leader. The 5.5 hectares mausoleum includes three giant yurt halls which house coffins of the Khan, his wife, his son and his generals. Overnight at Pinnacle Hotel Huhhot 4*. (B)(L)(D)

After the collapse of the Mongol Empire it was abandoned and vandalized by Manchurian invading hordes. Most of the remains were used to re-build the first Buddhist Monastery in Mongolia-Erdene Zuu, built-in 1586. 400 meter long with 108 Stupas still surrounds Erdene Zuu Monastery which was built in 1586. It was restored in 1760. In 1792 the Monastery still had 62 temples and 10,000 lamas. But in 1930 it became a victim of the Stalin's purges. All but three of the Temples were destroyed and most of the monks were either killed or sent to Siberia. Today the restoration of the Monastery is the government's top priority.
