The Best Taimen
Extreme Fishing-2005

Dear Fisherman:
Mongolia offers one of the last wildernesses in Asia and in the
World. It has got plenty of waters with often rich marine life.
One of the largest living freshwater fish on earth, the Taimen
(Hucho Taimen) lives within the waters of various rivers and lakes.
The Taimen is a particularly
ferocious fish which can often obtain weights of 50 kilos or more.
Our major species are:
Salmon (Taimen), Trout, Pike, Grayling, Sig, River Perch, Siberian
Umber, Roach, Ide, Bull Ide, Golden Carp, Amur Catfish and Burbot.
Fishing Camps:
Located in the Northern Mongolia and in Central Mongolia,
we have exclusive permission for fishing on one of the best Taimen
rivers of Mongolia. A typical fishing day begins with early morning
breakfast and return to our Fishing Camp for dinner and overnights.
Cuisine at the camp is a variety of Occidental and Mongolian dishes.
Each meal is complemented with homemade soup, a variety of salads,
fresh-baked bread, a modest dessert, coffee and tea.
Recommended Rods and Lines:
A 9 ft rod for 9 or 10 wt lines is generally recommended for Taimen
fishing. We fish for Taimen with both floating and sinking lines;
a simple mouse-pattern fly can bring Taimen to the surface, but
in the deepest pools try a large streamer with a sinking line.
An example of what to expect
when fishing in Mongolia, In this case was taken to extremes.
We have now called this fishing spot the MUD HOLE:
This is the classic of Simon.
Taimen are known to the Mongolians as the
"River Wolf". They are an exceptionally ferocious predator
which feed on birds, prairie dogs, mice, and fish.
Others species are the Lenok- the Mongolian equivalent
of a trout, generally around 15 to 20 inches (2 to 3 lb) they
can grow to over 30 inches and the Grayling are plentiful
in Mongolia's rivers. |
Taimen conservation - Catch and Release
is exercised!.

Rods and Lines: I never
even cast my 9 weight fly rod I because we found taimen only in
deep pools with fast current. Under different conditions, large
streamers and mouse imitations should work. I caught all of my
fish on a medium-heavy seven and half foot glass bait casting
rod with an Ambassadeur 7000C Synchro reel loaded with 25 pound
monofilament.
If anything, I was undergunned.
Joan used an 8 foot spinning rod with 20 pound mono; 40 pound
braided line would have been a wiser choice. All of our fish were
caught on baits in natural colors; the best single lure was a
Heavy Duty 6 inch Bomber Long in the rainbow trout pattern. We
also caught fish on a Husky Pikie in silver flash, Rapala wobblers
in silver, and mice imitations. For lenok and grayling, a 3 or
5 weight fly rod with a floating line would be ideal.
A 9 ft rod for 9 or 10
wt lines is generally recommended for Taimen fishing. We fish
for Taimen with both floating and sinking lines; a simple mouse-pattern
fly can bring Taimen to the surface, but in the deepest pools
try a large streamer with a sinking line.
For Lenok ( trout ) and
Grayling a 5 or 6 weight rod and line is suitable . Spin-lure
anglers are welcome and can achieve some great catches; fly-fishermen
might consider bringing a spinning or bait-casting rod as back-up;
we ask you only to use lures with a single hook.
More Recommended Tackles: The
list of recommended tackle and fishing equipment includes 2-3
weight rods for medium and heavy drag, spinning reels with lines
ranging from 0.20-0.30 mm. High quality reels such as Shimano,
Aero GT or Stradue are recommended, as well as a sufficient number
of lures (floating wobblers of 14 cm-18 cm, spinners, rubber,
dummy fishes and other systems).
Fly-fishing anglers are advised to opt 6-8 AFTMA rods averaging
295 cm in length and to bring a set of both dry and wet flies
nymphs. Under different conditions large steamers and mouse imitations
work well. One catches lenok and grayling with 3 or 5 weight fly
rod and with floating line.
Taimen (Hucho taimen)
Fly tackle: 9 foot rod AFTM 8-10 – alternatively a two-handed
salmon rod may be used. A floating line and a selection of floaters
(T-200, T-300). Short and stout leaders 1-1,5 meter 15-25 lbs.
And a robust fly reel with a solid brake system and a capacity
of 150-200 meters of bavking. Large flies are needed to tease
the taimen effectively. Streamers same type as used for pike preferably
12-20 sm long or tied as tarpon flies made of light and colourful
materials. A must are large mouse patterns tied with deer hair.
They work well in sizes up to 10 cm body + tail or as big as can
be cast on the fly rod.
Spinning tackle:
A stout 9-10 foot rod handling 10-40 grams (a heavy pike rod)
with a strong spinning reel holding 150-200 meter of 15-25 lbs.
line. Wobblers suited for pike, surface wobblers (mice) a selection
of pike spoons and large spinners.
Lenok (Brachymstax lenok)
and Grayling (Thymallus thymallus)
Fly tackle: a light rod 8-9 foot AFTM 4-7, a
standard fly reel with a floater, 9 foot leader 5-7 lbs., a selection
of dries, nymphs and streamers.
Spinning: A 6-7 foot rod casting 5-15 grams 5-7
lbs line and a selection of spinners, wobblers and spoons as for
trout fishing.
If you are a fisherman, Mongolia is destination to be experienced
and definitely not to be missed!.

Here
are some of our favourite fishing waters:
Selenge river-the
largest river of Mongolia, on then northern part and flows to
Lake Baikal in Siberia.
Eg river-has its source in the Lake Khuvsgul
and flows about 500km, joining the Selenge river in northern
Mongolia and so to Lake Baikal in Siberia. The Eg river has
numerous species of fish, such as Taimen, Brachymystax lenok,
Esox lucius etc.
The Central & Far Northern rivers: Chuluut,
Suman, Ider, DelgerMoron, Shiskhiid, Tengis, Sharga (based on
3 fishermen or more participants). |
CLIMATE:
Known as the
'Land of Blue Skies', it has over 260 sunny days each year. The winter
is long and cold with temperatures often well below -30 ° Centigrade.
Despite these temperatures, the blue winter sky makes it often feel
warmer.
There is very little snowfall
but it and ice can remain for several weeks at a time. The rainy season
is from July to September, but the showers are often brief. The summer
is a very pleasant time because, although temperatures can reach +40
° Centigrade, the air is very dry. Summer evenings can be cool because
of Mongolia's high altitude.

To: Samar Magic Fishing Tours
Dear Sir,
I wanted
to send you a note to tell you how much Joan and I enjoyed our trip
to Mongolia. We cought lots of fish and Daschka, Narita and Dagay (I'm
sure I'm spelling their names incorrectly) made the trip all the more
enjoyable with their sense of humor and professionalism. I will think
about Mongolia in the months and years to come -- and hope I can figure
out a way to return. They tell me there are bigger taimen out there...We've
developed our slides and have sent the best ones back to get prints.
When they come back I'll scan and e-mail them to you. If there are any
that you want for your brochure, let me know and I'll send you hardcopies.
Do not hesitate to give my name to people as a reference. Bill
Brown. top

Dear Sir ,
First
I would like to wish you as well a very successful new year. Since I
came back from my trip with your organization, I never had a chance
to thank you for the quality of our stay. From the welcome at the airport
until the last night at the hotel (!) we have been treated as VIPs !.
Given the exceptional drought condition on the river, we had a very
successful fishing trip and your effort to take us on an other river,
while not as good as it could had been, has had the merit to make us
discovery astonishing scenery (volcano, lake, etc.) . We have enjoyed
staying in the Mongolian tents and to be treated as good by your team.
I would say that it has been a trip of a lifetime time but that is not
completely true as we intend to come back and to be treated as good...Eric
Gabas-Varini (Paris, France).
