WELCOME
TO RUSSIA |
Moscow:
with nearly 9 millions of inhabitants is the famous capital
of Russia and is counted to the biggest cities in the world.
His numerous historic and contemporary buildings as well as
the location as traffic center (9 railway stations and 4 airports)
enables Moscow to be the most important tourist town in Russia.
It was founded in 1147 and was destroyed and rebuild several
times. Moscow is the city of museums (more then 130) and of
theatres like Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre. The heart of
the city is the Kremlin and the Red Square with the famous St.
Basilius Cathedral, the Lenin Mausoleum and Manezh (Central
Exhibition Hall). What you certainly should see is also the
"Golden Ring"; north east of Moscow which is a ring of ancient
cities and remarkable monasteries like Sergiev Posad, Vladimir,
Susdal, Rostov Velikiy and Kostroma.
St.
Petersburg: called "Venice of the North", was founded
1703 by Peter the Great, is the second biggest city of Russia
with nearly 5 million inhabitants. Between 1712 to 1918 it was
the capital of Russia. St. Petersburg is located on both sides
of the Neva River and on 42 islands of the delta. Therefore
it has about 420 bridges. The town-planning masterpiece was
created by the most famous Russian and European architects and
artists and contains a lot of memorable and historic places
as the world-famed Hermitage, Kasan Cathedral, Isaac's Cathedral,
Summer Palace of Peter I., Winter Palace and Petergof. Best
time to visit St. Petersburg is during the "White Night" in
June.
The
Golden Ring: is the name given to a tourist journey,
consisting of group of ancient and historical Russian cities
starting with Vladimir and fanning our towards the north. The
route takes in cities and villages of Old Muscovy, each one
of which has its own particular place in history. The cities
and towns of Russia's Golden Ring such as Sergiev Posad, Vladimir
and Suzdal: ancient churches, old Russian icon-painting, frescoes
by Andrey Rublyov and Dionisy.
Kostroma: the
"northern capital of flax-growing";: the Ipatyevsky Monastery
.. .
Smolensk: the walls and towers of the ancient
Kremlin, the Cathedral of the Dormition ...
Novgorod: the "Lord Novgorod the Great",
one of the three Russian cities to be called "Great"
in the days of old, immediately brings to mind the Novgorod
veche (townspeople's assembly) and the square before the huge
and austere Cathedral of St. Sophia, as well as the Thousand
Years of Russia Monument. ..
Pskov: is associated, in the first place, with
the Pskov Kremlin, the Dovmontov Town, and the Mirozhsky Monastery
with its ancient Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour
(1156)...
Tula: the city of gunsmiths and ... of Tula
samovars which are famous far beyond Russia: the old, 16th-century
Kremlin and Yasnaya Polyana, Lev Tolstoy's estate ... Arkhangelsk,
the native town of Mikhail Lomonosov: the Novodvinskaya Fortress
where Peter the Great's fleet was built, the Malye Karely Museum
of Wooden Architecture . .. Sochi, a southern health resort:
the gentle Black Sea, bathing beaches, holidaying ...
Irkutsk: houses-museums of the Decembrists,
the university campus, the old Church of the Exaltation of the
Cross, charming Lake Baikal. . .
Vladivostok: Russia's easternmost port and
outpost on the shores of the Pacific Ocean . . .
