Route and itinerary

We will begin our journey at the new “Genghis Khan” Airport in Ulaanbaatar (opened July 3, 2021, located 52 km/32.3 miles away, a 2-3 hours’ drive depending on traffic), the capital of Mongolia, where you will be met by the Samar Magic Tours team. A honeymoon in Mongolia offers an unparalleled and romantic adventure, perfect for couples seeking unexplored nature, nomadic culture, and nights under the stars. The best months to visit are from June to mid- September, exploring the famous Gobi Desert, the Great Equestrian Statue of Genghis Khan, and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park in luxurious accommodations.

Mongolia is one of the most unique honeymoon destinations, perfect for couples craving freedom, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes. Unforgettable nights under the bright stars in the Gobi Desert, ever-changing landscapes, and bonding activities for adventurous couples await.

Mongolia is known as the land of the blue sky, characterized by its vast landscapes, nomadic culture, and extreme climate. Its capital is Ulaanbaatar, where most tourist services, banks, and shops are concentrated.

Currency

The official currency is the Tugrik or Tugrug (T), available in banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 20,000 Tugrik.
It is recommended to bring Euros or USD and exchange them gradually at banks and hotels in Ulaanbaatar.

Climate

The climate is harsh and extreme:

  • Winters are very cold, even covering the Gobi Desert with snow until April and keeping lakes frozen until May.
  • The rainy season is short (mid-July to September), with light and brief rainfall.
  • Nights are cool even in summer.

Approximate temperatures:

  • Spring (May): 14°C / 6°C at night, occasional rain, cold.
  • Summer (June–August): 28–30°C / 18°C at night, dry with occasional rain.
  • Autumn (September): 21–16°C / 0°C at night, dry and cold.

Recommended luggage

The lighter your luggage, the better.
It is recommended to bring:

  • Frameless backpack, duffel bag, or travel bag.
  • Small daypack (camera, sunscreen, binoculars, water bottle, flashlight).
  • Raincoat or poncho.
  • Warm jacket and clothing for higher altitudes.
  • Light cotton clothing.
  • Sunglasses and a cap.
  • Comfortable footwear.
  • Binoculars.

Small first aid kit

It is recommended to bring a personal kit with:

  • Mosquito repellent.
  • Saline solution.
  • Gauze.
  • Aspirin or paracetamol.

Electricity

220V, 50Hz, with European round-pin plugs.

Clothing

There are no specific dress requirements, but it is recommended to respect local customs.

Photography

Mongolia is one of the most photogenic countries in the world due to its landscapes, wildlife, culture, and people.
Entrance fees to museums, national parks, and monasteries are included according to the program, but photography is not.
In many temples and monasteries, photography is prohibited or requires an additional fee.
It is important to pay attention to signs (usually in Cyrillic or Mongolian), as once a photo is taken, payment is mandatory.

Food

The diet is mainly based on meat, especially lamb, along with flour-based foods.
Horse meat is also consumed.
Dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheeses from cow, goat, or yak) are common, although often strong in flavor.

Milk may not be pasteurized, so it is recommended to:

  • Boil it before consumption.
  • Prefer cooked foods.

In gers (traditional dwellings), travelers are often invited to try “airag” (fermented mare’s milk) and local cheeses. Refusing these offers may be considered impolite.

Shopping

Bargaining is not common and it is rare to reduce prices significantly.
You can find:

  • Local handicrafts, postcards, and clothing.
  • Carpets.
  • Leather and fur products.
  • Cashmere wool and camel hair.
  • Wooden toys, puzzles, and games.
  • Paintings (oil and watercolor).

In Ulaanbaatar, there are shopping centers with European products, generally expensive, such as the State Department Store and other modern malls.

Safety and precautions

Mongolia is a safe country, with low levels of violent crime and no significant issues with drugs or weapons.
However, as in any destination, caution should be taken with pickpockets.

Recommendations:

  • Book in advance during high season (July and August).
  • Upon arrival at the hotel, store your passport, visas, money, and valuables in the safe.
  • Stay alert in crowded places: restaurants, cafés, markets, central post office, and monasteries.

MONDAY, Day 3: GOBI DESERT: YOLYN AM CANYON OR THE VULTURE GORGE

Full Board Plan

Breakfast. 09:00 AM-Meeting with the Samar Magic Tours team and the vehicle. Departure to “Yolin” Canyon or the Vulture Valley (33 km/21 miles, 2:00 hours) in the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. We will explore “Yolin” Canyon or Vulture Gorge on foot (round-trip hikes), navigating a small stream located in Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park—established in 1993 with about 27,000 km², it is the largest in Mongolia. Yolyn Am (Mongolian: Ёлын Ам, Lammergeier Valley) is a deep and narrow gorge in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains of southern Mongolia. The valley is named after the Lammergeier, which is called Yol in Mongolian. The Lammergeier is an Old World vulture, so the name is often translated as Valley of the Vultures or Valley of the Eagles. The valley is located within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park. Yolyn Am is located in the Zuun Saikhanii Nuruu (Eastern Beauty) subrange of the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. The area, as part of the Gobi Desert, sees little precipitation. However, Yolyn Am is notable for a deep ice field. The ice field reaches several meters thick by the end of winter and is several kilometers long. In previous years it remained all year round, but the modern ice field tends to disappear in September. There is a small museum displaying dinosaur eggs, some bones, stuffed birds, and leopards. Here you will have the chance to hike in the Gobi valley with impressive landscapes. Once in “Yolin” Canyon, we will walk through the valley, which narrows until it becomes a gorge at the bottom of which runs a torrent, frozen most of the year until early July, and which constitutes one of the most spectacular spots in the Gobi. If we are lucky, we can observe the lammergeier, other birds, and small rodents. In this place, you can rent horses with local guides to cross the canyon (*extra payment on-site, directly to the locals). Return for lunch (33 km/21 miles, 2:00 hours). Free time at your leisure. Accommodation at a Gers Tourist Camp in the Gobi Desert.

TUESDAY, Day 4: GOBI DESERT: GIANT KHONGOR SINGING SAND DUNES/NOMAD FAMILY/EXCURSION ON BACTRIAN CAMELS

Full Board Plan

Breakfast. 08:00 AM-Meeting with the Samar Magic Tours team and the vehicle. Next, departure towards a tourist camp located near the giant sand dunes known as “Khongor” (180 km/112 miles, +3.0h). The sand dunes known as “Khongor” are giant sand dunes in Mongolia, also known as “singing dunes” due to the sound the wind produces as it passes through them. When the wind blows or the sand slides, they produce a vibrant and spectacular sound, like a song or a roar, although rain can compact the sand and silence it temporarily. They stretch for kilometers, reaching heights of up to 300 meters in some areas, creating an impressive desert landscape. The giant dunes of “Khongor” in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert are the most important sand dunes in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Their area is over 900 square kilometers/559.23 square miles. We will visit a nomadic family with Bactrian camel breeders. A one-hour excursion riding a Bactrian camel. We will walk through the dunes and can climb the highest peak, from where we can observe a wonderful sand dune landscape and enjoy the contrast of the Gobi desert. The climb is a challenge, but the panoramic views from the top at sunrise or sunset are unforgettable, full of peace and beauty. Accommodation at a Gers tourist camp, located near the giant sand dunes known as “Khongor”.
